I worked in the old General Steel Industries plant in Illinois back in the mid '60's. We cast the hulls for the M48 series of tanks. That company had in the casting department several craftsmen with the job title of "Mold Finisher". It was their job to examine each sand mold before the molten steel was poured into it. Any rough spots were removed and filled with fresh core sand and sprayed with a special kind of hi-temp coating. It was yellow in color and would make any imperfection show up. After the steel was cast
they were examined again for blemishes. If any were found a worker with a grinder would smooth them flush. Any gouges or pits were welded over. Later, while serving as a Marine Corps tank crewman I spent many hours washing, scraping and painting M103's and M48's. In my experience with these two tanks they had quite a smooth surface finish. I remember the paint as having an egg shell kind of sheen. At least until they went to Viet Nam. Then the sand, mud and sun took it's toll.

Just my two cents......
