If you want a metal mesh, go to a model railroad store.
There's mesh in aluminum or brass that is very fine. I can't remember the brandname, and my stuff is packed away right now. At Hobby Junction in Montreal they keep the stuff with the RR supplies, forcing modellers to go the back of the store where all the train sets are...
