Brian,
Have thought about using acetone and Tamiya grey putty? You get a bit of putty where you want it then add acetone to thin it down. As the acetone evaporates you “stipple” it or wave it around. Stipple for cast and waves for armor (run a bit of steel wool over it after it dries to even it up).
You can use glue to soften the surface of the plastics and the stipple. After it dries sand it back to the texture you are looking for.
I hope that helps and you have no need to fear the acetone texturing technique (do it in a well ventilated area) because it’s adding to the surface, not eating/etching.
