Not sure Roy, but I believe Damon is referring to the "pyramid" shaped gril thingy hidden under the armored cover. My guess is that these we cast (kind of like the early "slatted" Jeep radiator gril). It was actually a two-part affair split in the middle and hinged on either side.

The only actual picture of this thing I have seen was on a M4(105), so it might be a late production thing, as opposed to the flat air intake gril depicted on the hulls of Tamiya's early M4 and DML's early M4A1 (that part of the latter was carried over to the new M4A1 76mm kit, which makes it incorrect for this model because of two filler caps on either side of the air intake).
