The Granite City, IL plant closed in the late 1960's or early 1970's. Not sure of the exact year. There was another General Steel plant in
Pennsylvania. That one servived a few years but
closed due to loss of defense contracts. I know
a few of the former employees. I have never heard any of them mention the company still operating under any other name. The Granite City plant was a very old, outmoded operation. Still, the urrets and hulls that came out were first rate. The turrets and hulls produced at the Granite City pland were cast with the General Steel corporate logo on the bow glacis bellow the drivers hatch and centered on both sides of the turret. It was around 4 inches square.I have reproduced the logo in GIF format. If anyone would like to add the logo to their M48 builds drop me an email and I will return as an email attachment. Not all USMC M48's that I saw had this logo. They may have been produced by other companies. |
