Spackle was the material used in the very first article I ever saw about Zimmerit, back in Scale Modeler around 1972. The author used corrugated model railroad sheet metal to apply the texture, and I tried the technique out. The spackle was easy to texture, but incredibly fragile until all the water evaporated. Once dry, the stuff was very tenacious and adhered well (the early Tamiya kits all had an orange-peel "armor texture" on the surface, which probably helped). The final finish looks a bit soft, due to the tendency of spackle to settle, and you can only do one side of the vehicle at a time due to the very long time needed for the stuff to harden.
I prefer resin type putties now, when I do my own Zimmerit (though the aftermarket resin sets from Atak and Cavalier are much faster). Don't like the look of the photoetch metal Zimmerit from Verlinden and Eduard, though it might be good for smaller scales than 1/35th. |
