I am by NO means an expert, but let me throw in my ingnorance. When viewing a refference picture to document sag, you need to keep in mind the vehicle and the circumstances. German and Russan tanks had "dead" track that tended to be looser. However, German tanks were front driven while the Russian ones were rear driven.
When a German tank was in FORWARD motion, all slack would by nature be pulled from the above ground track. Any slack in the system would be deposited between the drive sprocked and the first road wheel. The drive sprocket would be pulling the tank forward on the track already on the ground. Therefore any picture showing a German tank in motion (even slow speed) would have no slack showing in the track.
Note: in the two pictures above, the tank with no slack is obviously in motion while the one with slack is clearly at rest.
The Russian tanks were driven from the rear. The drive sprocket would essentially be moving the tank by pulling the track out from under it. the area of slack then would be the entire upper track area from the drive sprocket to the ground under the first road wheel. Under this circumstanc track sag would be very evident unless the crew has just tightened the track.
Both styls would display sag when at rest, if the track had not been reciently tightened.
Almost exclusivly, we are modeling tanks at REST. Therefore, sag would not be uncommon. However, if your model was ment to depict a tank with a digilent maintance crew, you could choose to do one with no sag. Pay your money and take your pick. |
