Hi Rutger,
I think the explanation for this is somewhat the same for the color variation on AFVs -- wear and tear, subtle changes in cloth from manufacturers, and how the sunlight hits the cloth. And, of course, period color photos, printing and even monitor colors can be off a shade or two from reality.
The Windrow and Hawkins book shows a darker brown than seen on the DML box art. The W&H photos are shot on an overcast day with dark foliage and groundcover. The DML soldiers are standing in a clearing, the light reflected by the snow. Not that you can compare photos to illustrations, of course. But even the reflective light will be a factor in how the color appears.
Having said all that, I had painted my overcoats a mix of 3 parts leather brown to 1 part field drab (ModelMaster paint). For my current project, I've used MM's Military Brown. For a couple figures I added a touch of field drab just for a little variance.
In fact, I'll often differ the same color just a bit on figures just to show a more realistic variety.
And cover my bases! ;-)
