IIRC the black uniform was part of the Allegemeine SS (General SS) which was made up of part-time troops, except for personnel of major rank and above (source: _The Waffen SS: Hitler's Elite Guard at War_ by Stein). However, the troops guarding Hitler were IIRC from the Waffen SS, and the uniform was ceremonial.

Originally they were called the Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler, but later they of course became a division of their own right.
