Great points. Yes, this was done in my older style which used washes for the
shadows. I have long ago switched to oil mixes to detail these. One big
reason why I classify the figure as unfinished. I need to go back over it
and blend the shadows. Ditto with the highlights. A bit of lightflash, but
mostly lightened humbrol. BTW, as I learned from Mark Bannerman, Humbrol
mixes very well with H&N oil paint. Which gives to MANY options, and lots of
control.
Face tones are always tricky. I start with a base coat of Humbrol flesh, and
let it dry a long time. Seal it with spray lacquer, then I use very thin
layers of Windsor & Newton oils to add details. If you take your time, you
have lots of control. I suggest interested people take a look at Mark
Bannermans, and Lynn Kessler's articles, they are all over the net. Both
gentlemen have helped my figure painted development more than they can
imagine. I owe them a lot for their selfless, excellent help.
Generally it takes two weeks to make a 1/35th scale head look even half
decent. 120mm, and 200mm heads are much more work since they are large
enough that everyone can see your mistakes!!
