Hi guys,

Hope you don't mind my chippin in into this fascinating subject.
I can only hope that my efforts to enlighten on this subject are of any use to you.

Not knowing where you all are from, I'm Dutch and my parents have gone through the occupation of Holland during WW-II in their early twenties.
They keep talking about the extremely harsh winter of '44-45 that struck most of Europe. One that was -until then- one of the worst on record in both duration and extremely low temps.
(...just remember the harsh weatherconditions around the Battle of the Bulge/Bastogne..anyone who missed Band of Brothers ?)
So on basis of this I think i.m.h.o. that it is wise to assume that any combat troops, including the Soviets, were wearing winter clothing, when and if they had it right up to the Battle for Berlin.
That is to say right up to VE Day.

Secondly, I just finished reading a book titled "Berlin, The Downfall 1945" by author Anthony Beevor. My copy is a Penguin pocket, ISBN
0-141--01747-3. It certainly is very worthwhile reading.
And it is illustrated with fifty b/w pictures of the taking of Berlin.

On many of the pics (that I can't enclose for copyright reasons) you can see Soviet troops either close to, or in. Berlin wearing all kinds of long wintercoats with upturned collars, or those typical Russian short, stuffed winter jackets, lots of soldiers wearing fur caps, many with hands in gloves and so on.

All such details just point into the same direction...it must have been a pretty chilly affair weatherwise.

Hope this helps and good luck with your Berlin Projects !

Jerry
