I have used the method described by Jim for some time myself but in a recent email discussion I had with Stefan Mueller-Herdemertens, he suggested using a sandy color instead of gray. When I mentioned our conversation to Ron Volstad, he told me he uses sand colors as well for painting the figures in his boxart.
