I may be somewhat redundant here, what with the previous replies.....
By "Normandy '44" I assume you mean June, July and Aug., '44.
MOST straight-leg infantry outfits wore the wool OD's, with a
few divisions wearing the 2nd Model Dark Green HBT's. Over this
they wore mainly the '41 field jacket. I have not seen any mix
of these styles, not in the summer of '44. Just one or the other,
in varying degrees of grungyness (replacements, I reckon). You
DID see the OD wool flannel shirt worn under/with the HBT's. (When
I say OD, I mean the mustard brown/khaki wool uniform.)
I used to be a WWII GI reenactor, and we used to PORE over pictures,
trying to perfect our persona's. Once you get to Fall/Winter '44 and
1945, one starts to see a lot of the mixture you are referring to.
