Quote: Please excuse my terrible ignorance but, would US infantry (excluding 2nd Armoured) be found in Normandy either wearing:
(a) brown trousers and a sand coloured jacket
and/or
(b) All over dark green
(a): Yes, the is the M1941 uniform. It was the standard uniform for GIs during most of the war. Beginning in septmber 1944, it was in the process of being replaced with the OD green M1943 dress. This was part of a project to darken army colours. So this means for (b) that that isn't possible, until at least september 1944.
1) Would it be possible to find infantry wearing brown coloured trousers with green jackets?
Would be possible, though not likely. There might be lads hanging on to old equipment because they liked it. Photo are good references.
2) Might both ensembles (a) and (b) be found mixed in the same platoon?
Yes, that's quite possible. The supplies of clothes didn't get to the troops at very regular basis do until the end of the war, the M1942 dress was also seen. The M1943 was preferred, because it allowed for a liner to keep the wearer warm. During the Ardennes fighting, there's was quite a mix of uniforms worn: long overcoats, M1941 uniforms, M1943 battle dress, Mackinaw coats ... GIs would scrounge whatever they could get to keep warm.
3) Is Tamiya XF61 a good likeness for the dark green outfit?
I don't know of the actual colour, but I think it would be. Colours vary from batch to batch. You might want to try the Vallejo range. It has several specific US colours.
Hope this helps,
