Hi Michael,
I have painted 1/72 scale soft plastic figures with acrylic paints and have had success. (no peeling or cracking). First, wash the figures in a mild dish washing soap/water solution to clean off any mold releasing agents (a good thing to do to by the way to any plastic kit before assembling and painting). The acrylic paints are more flexible than oil base and since you are painting plastic with plastic you have a better material compatibility.
