And there a couple of different books out there.
Bill Horan's Military Modelling Masterclass is a great one for showing conversions etc.
Bill Ottinger's book is similar, although focusing on Historex figs as a starting point and Napoleonics.
Finally, Shep Paine's books cover conversions etc., but it sounds like you want to go beyond that...
