Andy,

For black use a base color of black. I will assume that you are going to use oil paints. Only highlight black. Mix Payne's Gray with a bit of white to make a dark gray highlight. Paint the highlight color at the point that would reflect the most light. Place some Raw Umber between the highlight and black. Stipple the black, Raw Umber and highlight to gently blend the values.
