One tip for painting white or black is not to use much white or black. Usually white is really an off white, so mixtures of white and something else work, and white can be applied for the highest highlights. Likewise for black. A very dark grey base works, then black only in the deepest shadows. For more color pop, a little blue with the black makes for nice shadow. And some flesh color for the highlights works. Avoid using white to highlight black. It can be done, but often goes too far.
