i am surprised how unaffected i was by the depiction of a black negro boy shining an officers boot.

I guess im not as sensitive to racial villification. I see it as just another set of figures I wont be buying..

as for the subject of taste,

I do not believe that by pretending something didnt happen it will go away.

is it at all possible this happened at some stage during the war ? if so then its modellers perogative as to what subject matter they chose to build. remember not everyone displays publicly their endeavours.

taste is a very personal and subjective matter.

its a good thing your cannot tell the religion of soldiers (or civilians) or some of the diorama figures might be explosively sensitive to different cultures. Would muslims even allow any figures of non muslim persons to be built ? what does the Koran say about the depiction of persons? I know their mosques and the like do not have figures in them on the walls like western/christian places of worship. this goes for artwork and sculpture. there are always extremists in every aspect of life, and im not sure being sooo sensitive to things produces a better world..

the assumption here is this negro is _American_ (i have never heard the term _negro_ used to describe a person of African nationality) but why cant it be an African youth ? if it has dark skin tone it could be arab in western clothing.

I am surprised how sensitive and politically correct people can get over these toys.

I am glad that i dont find American revolution or history my favourite subject matter. If I built a cotton farm diorama with several farm workers in it , the scene being an accurate depiction of historical fact, would that become offensive ? (devils advocate example here people) im sure some would howl racism. but not everyone. some might appreciate it for what it is and use it as a tool to learn from.

The military equivalent of course is anything showing Jewish holocaust.
That is a taboo subject (hmm new thread here Paul)

Francois is a belgium national yes? how were they treated during war and what cultural impressions have been left on him and his country since the war ? does this go somewhat to explaining his subject matter ? Is it rude for one country or culture to _impose_ their values on another ? that just shows lack of respect and utter arrogance to the rest of the world.

there are definitely bigger and badder things to worry about in this world. but people living in glass houses ought not throw stones. If you value your right to true freedom of expression then you value his right to produce tasteless subjects.

Adam
