Hi
When it comes to painting with oils can I recommend you read up on Shep Paine's techniques for faces, hands, hair. He recommends a very limited palette using gold ochre, burnt sienna, titanium white with the merest hints of alizarin crimson. If only I could find the damn book to tell you the title! But the essence is keep it simple blend the colours on the model and avoid black. Use the best quality sable brushes you can get ( Windsor and Newton series 7 ) And practice practice practice. I use a white undercoat then an acrylic flesh wash over that as a base.Once it's dry if you mess up you can take the oils off with a touch of white spirit and start again.
Squeeze the oils out onto paper and let the excess oil be absorbed and use white spirit sparingly to thin them - this gives a lovely flat finish.
Hope these ramblings are of help - I've shoved a pic of one of my efforts with the post to prove it works!
