Hi Paul,
I know this is a little later than your actual thread listing was first published, but when I first started painting figures about 7 years ago one book I found very useful was " The System" by Francois Verlinden (still in print I believe). This concentrates on the use of oils & enamels.
Also published in "Military Modelling" magazine in the UK about 4-5 years ago was a series of articles on face painting by Adrian Hopwood, which were very informative particularly with regard to blending & highlighting oils. You may be able to find these articles by accessing the MilMod website, or contacting Ken Jones direct.
As a base mix for paiting faces I like to use Burnt Sienna/Raw Umber/Yellow Ochre applied over a base coat of Tamiya Flesh (applied by airbrush), & brushed clean with a flat brush so the oil mix remains in the depressions of the figure's face, & leaves a translucent tint over the remainder. Highlights are then applied initially using Cadmium Yellow & blended, followed by a second highlight run using Titanium White over the yellow & again blended. All this can be done quite easily in half a day, when blended to your satisfaction leave to dry overnight & then details such as eyes, lips & hair can be added the following day. If you're not happy with the results then strip the head by soaking for a few hours in oven cleaner in a sealed box, clean away the paint by scrubbing in water with a toothbrush & then repaint again starting with the flesh undercoat.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris.
