Hi Alex,
No doubt you're also aware of other items reverse Lend-Leased to US Forces, like the web equipment made by British companies for US troops, boots for infantry soldiers (easily distinguishable because they were hobnailed unlike standard US footwear which had rubber soles), parachutes & RAF-issue lifereafts for 8th AF bomber crews, not to mention the Austin K9 ambulances which were mass-produced for the 8th AF in Britain.
Even the bicycles which US airmen pedalled around airfields in the UK were produced for them by British contractors!
So I think we did our bit in a small way, in return for the thousands of Shermans, Jeeps, tank landing ships, Mustangs, Tommy guns & the myriad number of other items the UK received under Lend-Lease.
Interesting about the Recce Corps mods to the leather jerkin, never seen that one before. But.....knowing the British squaddie's resourcefulness & aptitude for modifying his kit to suit the purpose, anything is possible. I remember once going on an exercise in southern France in 1980, facilities were a bit primative & so we made our own toilet from a bathroom stool with its seat ripped off, some foam rubber & a generous helping of British Army black masking tape. Worked a treat - some wag suggested we donate it to the Imperial War Museum when Endex came around!
Cheers,
Chris.
