I too would LOVE to see more diversity in available kits. But looking at a
number of factors, I think "that the enemy is US"! Guys are insane for those
naughty nazis, and the SS are the top of the heap.
Every contest and show I have ever seen, has five German vehicles for every
one other type entered. Every 20th century figure show, or show group, has
more Germans than any other single type of entry. Every internet forum, has
at least twice as many German questions, as Allied questions. And I can't
even count the number of times the first posting a new person posts starts
with, "how do you paint SS camouflage". And anything SS sells on E.bay like
McDonalds French fries.
For whatever combination of reasons, guys LOVE the SS. It's the SCALE
MODELING COMMUNITIES fault that "anything SS sells". If we did not buy them,
no one would make them.
I am just as guilty as the next person.when I see figures, I buy the ones
that have the poses I like, or think I can work with. Often, they are SS.
And for a long time, most of my German WWII AFVs were SS.
I offer no explanation of how the atrocities of some SS units, have become
"divorced" from scale modelers love of them? I mean the "Florian Geyer
division"? Give me a break. Eh....... wasn't anyone involved in "Partisan
control" probably shooting civilians?
Seems to me that the only way to fix this denial would be to do what was
done to German's who lived near the camps. The Allied troops rounded them
up, and marched them down to the camps, to see EXACTLY what they had done.
That's not going to happen here, so perhaps I might suggest a different way
that this can change. What would happen if a group of us REFUSED to build
anything SS for some time period. Not just build it that way, but let it be
known [subtlety] that we are doing this. You could just include some
statement in your model description saying that it is non SS. Would that
help? Maybe it might provoke some "newbies" to ask, what we are doing and
why.
There is such a diversity of possible figures, and vehicles that could be
built. Okay, even the German ones alone, make a long list. But only some
sort of action by scale modelers can make a difference.
I don' think that writing the vendors does one bit of good. Only Warriors
has "stepped up to the plate", and is coming out with allied figures. I
think the rest are deafened by money. And I don't blame them, they are in
business to make money. So, only money will make them stand up and take
notice.
I hope this is constructive. |
