Hello - here is my "Spiel",

Apparently Hitler won...

When he restored the German armed forces in the 1930's, he wanted them to
appear fearsome, professional, something other countries will look up to - a
sense of elitism. That is why almost every organization had it's own
uniform, and why the uniforms looked so "smart".

In addition, he wanted to attract people to his ideology and he does it with
fancy trinkets like various medals, fancy belt buckles, buttons, boots,
ceremonial sidearms (swords, knives, pistols) also with heroic sounding
names for the groups. With these comes an incredible (sometimes fanatical)
sense of group identity. Hitler Jugend anyone???

We modellers are suckers for details. And German uniforms are full of them.
Same thing with German AFV's, they just seem so "high-tech", so "cool".

With the S.S., since it was the official private army of the Nazi party, it
gets an extra dose of everything to make it attractive. From the simplistic
yet striking shape of it's runic symbol to the black uniforms. The combat
branch of the S.S., the Waffen-S.S. gets all the latest in German military
technology, making them perhaps the best equiped soldiers in the world
during the time period.

Yes, modellers are suckers for camoflague smocks. Admit it, it does look
more modern and a heck lot cooler than traditional German Feldgrau. Also
don't mention that "evil" looking German helmet, looks a heck lot menancing
than the flat rimmed British ones.

And sadly, the Asian market (especially the Japanese, sorry not to
specifically single a group out) are even more infatuated with anything S.S.
related. On a recent trip to Japan, I saw a specialty store selling things
ranging from fully automatic airsoft MP44 B.B. guns, German helmets made out
of heavy plastic (WITH camo covering) for youngsters to engage in mock ETO
battles to faux IRON CROSSES to decorate "war-heroes"!!!

Can't blame them, after all, they ARE thousands of miles from where it
REALLY happened. This incredible "hero-worship" of anything Nazi and S.S.
related only influences manufacturers to produce more to feed the market.

In My Honest Opinion, this is why we are facing such a disturbing trend in
modelling. Too bad, blame Adolf Hitler, but German things ARE cool. Because
Hitler intended it to be so more than 50 years ago. And we are still
attracted to it.

Sincerely,
-=Yc.W=-
