Steven,
According to the Osprey Men-At-Arms title on the HG Division, grenadiers within the Division in Italy were issued the standard Luftwaffe field-blue greatcoat. Because this was quite conspicuous, the greatcoat was sometimes covered by the Waffen-SS camouflage smock issued to the troops early in the Division's existence. When the supply of W-SS camouflage clothing stopped, HG troops began to be issued with the Luftwaffe splinter-pattern camo jacket which again was worn over the greatcoat in inclement weather.
Those soldiers who had no camo jackets sometimes wore the issue splinter-pattern Zeltbahn shelter quarter as a poncho over the greatcoat. Later in the war, when the HG Division began to be deployed on the Eastern Front, a field-grey Army combat uniform was issued to the field units which was worn with Luftwaffe insignia (but collar patches are seldom seen on this). Thinking logically, perhaps a field-grey greatcoat was issued with this uniform, but the field-grey clothing was never available to HG units in Italy who tended to wear tropical or standard Luftwaffe uniforms with appropriate insignia.
Hope this helps you,
Chris. |
