The Tamiya figures are OK too, and you're right they are very similar to the Tristar ones. I guess I like the Tristar set a little better. Both are post-1942 uniform. You're right about the hands being too large, although this is a frequent problem with figures in general.
I think the Miniart figures are excellent. They are a little flashy and sometimes have gaps in the fit (less so with the newer sets), but if you can put up with fixing that, the poses and detail are excellent. The set of "Soviet officers at field briefing" is one of their best. Their winter crew is excellent also - very bulky-looking winter uniforms.
One other set not to be overlooked is ICM's older set of three figures. I believe its called "Barbarossa, 1941" or something like that. It has two figures in tankers overalls and an officer. The officer is so-so...but the two guys in coveralls are quite good.
Alpine's figures are top-notch of course - absolutely terrific and great values.
