The sidecap was supposed to replace the beret before the French campaign, but many troops still wore the older item until after the armistice. The billed cap, patterned after the mountain cap, was available after 1942. The StuG III Ausf. B was in service in Russia at least through 1942, though it was gradually supplanted by later production models. The assault artillery crews were supposed to wear field gray versions of the wool panzer uniform, but some units got the black garments anyway. Check photos for your particular unit.
