Hi Michel,
The field-grey panzer beret was even scarcer than the black one, but there are instances of it turning up in the most unlikely places. I once saw a photo of a Panzerwerfer Maultier crewman loading a rocket tube dated 1943/44, & he was wearing a field-grey Sturmartillerie uniform with beret, so it's possible stocks of this headgear may have been issued to newly-formed units simply to get rid of them (the German armed forces of WW2 were great recyclers of material).
Also, it's a myth that Sturmartillerie units only wore the field-grey special clothing. If you read Osprey's "The Panzer Divisions", there are colour plates in that reference showing StuG crewmen wearing black Panzer uniforms with plain black collar patches piped in pink, with no metal skulls attached. The photos these plates were painted from showed late-war StuG crewmen apparently from a training school.
So in the case of WW2 German uniform regulations, never say never!
Cheers,
Chris. |
