| Subject: | Pink on panzer uniforms...and pockets! | |

Hello, all,
I have noticed something on many of the German tank models displayed on this site and others. Many builders paint pink far down on the lapels of the black panzer wrap. This is not accurate. The pink piping should only go around the outer edge of the large collar and the lower edge past the corner points. Some modelers seem to want to continue the piping all of the way down the outer edge of the entire turnback. Remember, this is a panzer wrap....not a prom tuxedo! Remember too that later in the war much of the use of pink piping was discontinued as an economy measure. That would mean that many uniforms would have pink-piped patches with skulls and pink-piped epaulets only.
I have also noticed that many modelers paint panzer wraps with pockets black, as if they were the black wool uniforms. The large chest pocket was featured on the light, denim cotton uniform...and not the heavy black wool uniform. If you are going to paint the uniform worn by, for example, the men in the DML "Actung, Jabo" set black, then make sure you shave or file off the big chest pocket.
Finally, the M-43 cap with visor was not very common until 1943. Prior to that, the Schiffen (boat cap) would have been much more common.
Cheers,
Richard Isner |
