Isn't the pre-ponderance of Nazi kits more of a practical
issue than a moral one? Starting from where we are, rather than when the
Nazi subjects began their dominance with the appearance of Eastern
manufactures on the scene. Imagine you in your local model shop buying your
first kit. Inevitably the shelves are full of Nazi vehicles, the most
interesting looking vehicles (purely from a box art point of view) are
likely to be Nazi vehicles, so not being an expert on the subject, you buy
into the genre which offers the widest choice and the widest prospects for a
large collection on a common theme. The manufacturers look at the sales
figures and think, crikey the Nazi stuff is doing well, lets add to the
range. The range expands, the subject becomes more popular, so the range
expands etc. Unfortunate, but not necessarily sinister.
Personally I stopped building Nazi subjects as a child,
after my first attempt. My first kit was a Panther-in S.S colours- which I
proudly showed to a family friend and war veteran. Upon seeing the thing he
looked horrified and told me of his experiences in Africa and how his war
had ended when he stepped on a mine 100 yards up the beach at Normandy
loosing a leg, his genitals and most of his bowels. Shocking, but necessary,
stuff for a child to hear. Since then, although I wouldn't dream of stopping
others from building kits in the genre of their choice, I've found Nazi
subjects to be in frightfully poor taste; and some modellers tendency to
glamorise their subjects to be a little worrying. Yes, most enlisted men in
the German army of that time were probably not that different at heart from
their Allied counter parts, but we all know about the atrocities that were
committed and I think some people should be less enclined to push these
thoughts from their minds when they frame a diorama.
