Jamie,
If you look at photos of British infantry in Normandy you will see the respirator haversack being worn in the majority of them on the left hip, but as the postulated threat of chemical weapons receded it gradually found its way into unit baggage trains.
Normal infantry units carried the haversack slung by its strap, but the haversack itself had 2 belt clips on its reverse side so it could be worn lengthways in the "alert position" on a soldier's belt. Airborne troops tended to wear it this way so it didn't bounce about; most photos of British paras & glider troops at Arnhem show them carrying it thus - all carried their respirators as part of their fighting order.
The Light Respirator Mk.II was always carried in its issued haversack; even though it was much more compact than the small box-type which it replaced, it would have been difficult to fit it into a 38 Pattern universal pouch as they weren't wide enough to accommodate the mask's canister.
A lot of soldiers may have ditched the respirator at the first opportunity, but with hindsight this wasn't wise as the threat still existed - US troops in NW Europe in early 1945 found a German ammunition dump containing 105mm artillery shells with markings they had never seen before; analysis revealed they contained Tabun, a nerve agent which had been synthesised by German chemists in the 1920s.
Cheers,
Chris. |
