Curtis,
you are right. A skat deck has 32 cards, no jokers, starting from 7 to ten Bube = Guy = Jack, Dame = Queen, King and Ace in the four coulours Hearts, Diamonds, Spade and cross.

It is an interesting game, played by three people with ten cards on the hand and two in the stock. After the cards are served, the players start bidding for the stock. Bidding is following a strict rule. The hand (the cards are added). The winning bidder says the game he plays.
He can play a colour raising the choosen colour to beat other colours except the Jacks that always beat colours, a grand where only the jacks beat other colours, or a Null, where the players must not make any points (if he does, he looses). There are a few other rules of course. Skat is a funny game, played in big tournaments in Europe.

The other card games that are and were common to be played by soldiers are Doppelkopf and "17 und 4" (Black Jack).

Doppelkopf is played with 4 people.

My grandpa once told me he lost 740 Reichsmark in one game of 17+4, but it was not that bad - although it was a lot of money - because there was nowhere he could spend his money in russia.

cheers
Frank
