Mike's right, don't make your base color black. Even a very dark grey is too dark. The deepest shadows on the uniform could be black; the shallower ones dark grey; the base color a medium grey, and the highlights can be very light grey. Really. The viewer's eyes will 'average' the colors and see a black uniform.
