I use acrylics. I agree in begin with a flat medium colour. Andrea colours are very flat, Vallejo had a slight sheen but adding a dab of Tamiya flat base you can get a dead matt finish. One colour I find that are great for highlighting black is 835 salmon rose, but any pinkish tone will do it. You can mix it with pure black for the base colour and then add more for the highlights.
Regarding the shadows I avoid totally flat colours. They give a lifeless appareance. Vallejo flat black is ok because as said itīs semi-satin.
