I've seen a group photo of Herbert Walther ( 12th SS Member and author of
the unit history) in U-Boot leathers with fellow members of 12th SS. IIRC he
is the only one wearing them. So obviously the wearing of them was more of a
personal choice and would certainly depend on if you actually had a set to
wear! Being a motorcyclist myself I can attest to the excellent windproofing
quality of leather as well as its ability to help keep the body warm.
Bear in mind D-Day was supposed to be June 5th but was delayed by a storm
also don't forget the severe storm which wrecked the Mulberry Harbours. With
all that inclement weather happening I know I'd want stay warm and dry as
best I could. To top that off Early June in North-West Europe is not as warm
as North America in Early June.
Don't forget Commonwealth troops were issued a leather jerkin as part of
their uniform, as part of their foul weather clothing.
