O.K.
After a quick glance through a couple of books I would say the Hip
gets the nod for those wearing it, or that I can see. Most pictures are
from the Bulge/Ardennes region and may not represent official policy. No
doubt someone more informed will be able to give you the official line.
My quick survey results in the following:
3x with T handled shovels of which 1 had it on his rucksack on his back,
1 on his left hip, 1 on his left hip with a cord holding it into leg
[Paratrooper]
1x Shovel carrier only on left hip.
9x with rounded handled shovel, of which 2 on right hip, 1 in rucksack
on back, 1 that almost has in his crotch [left predominant], 5 on left
hip. Not very conclusive but I present it for what it's worth, with the
observation that as in any army at war the most comfortable position for
equipment usually is where it will be found.
