From the photos I've seen, there were many different ways to carry the
entrenching tool. The haversack (backpack) had connecting straps to allow
the e-tool to be carried. The canvas cover had the metal connector to allow
it to be attached anywhere on the cartridge belt - it would ride on the
strip of the belt below the cartridge pouches. Also, I've seen it hooked to
the suspenders, in the middle of the back where they form an "x". So, you've
got a lot of options.
