This is the only Ordnance drawing of the E6180 shield I have. It is a chart showing the placement of x-ray film sheets during radiography. Anyways, although it is not dimensioned, it is undoubtedly traced from the casting drawing itself so it is a good scale drawing, within the limits of manual drafting.
Continuing from Part 1, I've drawn lines showing the transition between the flat sides and the corner radius on the side view. I also drew the centerline of the gun bore. You can see that the bore is not in the center of the shield but actually below center. The proportions are 59% of the shield above the bore, 41% below. Also, note the location of the trunnion notch. It appears to be centered slightly above the bore axis, but this may be a normal drafting inaccuracy, so I would not be firm about it. Clearly, however, it is below the center of the shield.
So, for the three questions:
1. Location of trunnion access notch in shield side (up/down)?
The notch should be below the center of the shield, by about 10% of the height.
2. Location of trunnion access notch in shield side (relative to gun)?
Inconclusive. The notch could be aligned with the gun axis, or very slightly above. Certainly it is below the center of the shield.
3. Location of lifting lugs?
These should be closer to the notch than than the top of the shield.
I don't have the DML M4A2(76) kit, so I'll leave to you guys to post what it looks like in comparision. Based on the Academy picture Julio posted, it looks like the the bottom of the Academy shield is too long, placing the gun in the middle of the shield. The notch is also the wrong shape it seems (with the lower part curving under the trunnion), which may also affect the relative look and proportions. That's just based on the picture though, as I don't have one here to compare directly.
