Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

Mike,
You are not way off, but you are showing the initial signs of becoming a Shermaholic. Think of Hayward as your initial exposure. When you get to the Hunnicutt level you will know there is no turning back.

Back to Fireflies and Shermans:

The hybrid M4 started production in Aug 43. The upswept bogeys were introduced around Oct 43.

So the early production hybrids had the horizontal roller arm with pillow block. Most had the upswept.

Reason for the large number of Firefly 1c's with horizontal arms: M4A4 production had ceased while the demand for Firefly vehicles was growing. The only available Shermans suitable for conversion were the remanufactured M4's that had been used for training in the US and the new production M4 Hybrids just being delivered. So, a lot of the Sherman 1c Hybrids were early production composites while a lot of the welded hull Ic's were Direct Vision models.

The Sherman "Grail Search" is to find a photo of a confirmed "small hatch" Sherman 1c hybrid.

As to my recommendation: Paul said he had one set of each on the way.

I still recommend that the early set go on the Sherman Vc because M4A4/Sherman V production ended before the upswept bogeys were introduced.

The late bogeys are fine for the Firefly 1c. Generally, a Hybrid with the high bustle turret, as in the DML kit, will also have the upswept arms. There are exceptions.

Of course, when modelling a specific vehicle it's best to check your refs.

Check Hayward photos: 86, 87, 96, 103-105 for examples of upswept return arms on Firefly 1c's.

Hope this helps and welcome to the Sherman fraternity.

Happy New Year!
mike
