Excellent question. I asked a few modellers in your position what they thought of kits today. I'll post it in the general forum.

Yes, in general, kits today are a lot better. Dragon kits, have very recently become a lot better. I have the E-100 too, and it is kilometres beyond the old Matchbox and Airfix small scale kits.
