Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

The AFV club suspenssion doesn't actually work without modification on the Tamiya/Academy hull (said that way as the Academy hull is virtually a direct copy of the Tamiya hull, warts & all) as that hull has dimensional problems that were compensated for in the Tamiya/Academy suspension. You have to modify the location of the suspension mount points to get things to line up properly otherwise the shape of the track run is noticably off. I can't remember for sure if Rob actually corrected the dimensional problems with the old hull. I don't think so, IIRC.

If you are going to use the Tamiya Academy hull, I'd use the old Tamiya suspension as it is more detailed than the Academy copy. I personally find the narrow road wheels of the Tamiya suspension less of a pain than the simplified detail of the Academy suspension. The Tamiya/Academy hull also still has a turret ring that is almost .120" too small in diameter, completely throwing off the look of that interface, in my mind.

The ultimate Honey kit doesn't exist.

You really need to scratch build a new, accurate hull, incorporating the transmission cover and rear hull from the AFV suspension set as well as using the Formations hull as a pattern for accuate hull details, with reshaped sponsons and a proper depth hull. Add the AFV suspension & track and then add a modified Academy 8-sided turret with a correct turret ring and proper vision ports. Equip the M3 with stowage boxes with vertical sides (no draft angles, please) and you are well on your way to a proper, accurate early M3 Stuart in British service.
