Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

David...the Italeri USMC M4 kit is a bit of a mish-mash. The hull is actually their M4A3 hull with some - not all - of the parts necessary to convert it to a late M4A2. That said, it builds into a not-bad M4A3, which is appropriate for ETO though not for D-Day...the M4A3s did not reach the troops until about August 1944.

The wading trunks are also, I've been told, the wrong pattern for D-Day. Certainly there are some differences between D-Day photographs and the shape of the kit's trunks. The kit parts seem closer to Pacific photographs.

You could possibly use the kit as the basis for an M4A3 used in the Rhine crossings...certainly DDs and other amphibious vehicles were used so it's quite possible some tanks were fitted with wading trunks.

To do a D-Day vehicle, use the Tamiya M4 "Early" (it's really a mid-production) or the Dragon M4A1 with the wider mantlet parts. You'd still need to modify the wading trunks for complete accuracy though.

Hope this helps...

Neil
