They are trunnion caps actually, and they should be there.
Another feature - which is actually an error - is that they used the same bottom piece for the new round hatch turret that they used for the M4A2's oval hatch turret. The bottom is correct for the foundry symbol on the oval hatch but incorrect for the round hatch turret top.
The oval hatch turret (cast by ASF-G) looks like this on the bottom:

but the round hatch turret (cast by CFM-H) should look like this:

Note that in the above pics both turrets are round hatched. The lower contour is foundry dependent, not type dependent.
Note also that the Continental Hubbard turret shown in the photos is the actual turret included with the new M4A3 kit (same serial). Inasmuch as this turret was a battlefied recovery from the Bastogne area, it certainly was appropos for a Battle of the Bulge tank!
