OK, I'll weigh in on this one.

The Pz III roadwheel halves were attached by a series of tubes, the external manifestations of which were those holes that run in a circle round the hub. The kit manufacturers, in the interests of buildability and structural strength, compromised by making their wheels join at the hub instead.

It should, in theory, be possible to 'correct' the kit wheels but I don't know of anyone mad enough to have tried.

One thing that would be a higher priority for me is to correct the idlers, as the rims are solid in the kits but should be an open channel in section. And there are only four of those to do per vehicle!
