I know this is a little late, but I was speaking to a friend today and he related the subject of the tread plate pattern on the Tristar Pz IV D came up in a conversation with another modeler. Since I had not checked into this previously I decided to try to shed some light on the subject for myself. I pulled out my trusty Strum and Drang book on the Panzer IV series. Lo and behold, I found 1 picture of a Pz IV A with the dot pattern on the fenders. I didn't see any pictures of the B or C showing the fender pattern. Looking further, I found 4-5 more pictures of the Pz IV D with the same dot pattern on the fenders also. It seems the pattern changed to the 90* bar pattern sometime in the E - F series. Then again, it would not be out of the ordinary for the Germans to have used both patterns at the same time. However, I have no evidence of this.
HTH, if you were concerned about the pattern used on the Tristar Pz IV D.
