Forums - Modelling / Kits

The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too.

No, the Academy wouldn't work.

The M5 used a different engine to the M3 series. The M3 used a radial engine, but these were need for airplanes as well. The M5 was designed to use twin Cadillace engines. This setup required the lower hull to be lengthened. The M5 entered service in November 1942. Combat experiences showed that the hull design was superior to the rather boxy M3 series, so there was a program set up to try and modernize the M3 series by improving the hull and turret. This eventually became the M3A3. The British used the M3A3/ Stuart V quite extensively, and they requested that a radio was to be fitted in the rear of the turret, so a turret bustle was fitted. This turret design proved to be superior to the one used on the M5. So this turret was fitted on a M5 hull, becoming the M5A1.

Well, now for the modelling bit.
The Academy series will not be useful to correct Tamiya's kit. The 'M3A1' (which actually is more like a late production M3, but that's another story) might be used to create a M5.

There are several sets for Tamiya's M5A1. VP provides an interior set, but this one fits the standard Tamiya kit, so might be of limited use. Their exterior set is useful for detail, but does not correct any dimensional issues.
The Legend set has a new engine deck, but this only correct the rise of the engine deck. The lower hull is the same size as the Tamiya kit, ie undersized.
Formations produces a rather nice kit, that uses the AFV Club kit. Together, this gives you an accurate lower hull, upper hull, good, mid production turret with some bits of interior detail (radio, gun breech, small boxes), an aluminium barrel, and PE for the rear engine screens. Best way to go imho.
