The kits forum is for the discussion of model kits. Typically questions on availability or certain subjects and quality of existing kits are posted here. Short reviews are good here too. |

The Gepaeckkasten in DML’s ausf E kit is substantially bigger (nearly 3mm wider and almost 2mm longer) than those in other Pz.IV kits. I compared Itareli kit (ausf H), Gunze/DML kit (ausf F1), DML kit (ausf J), Tamiya kit (ausf H), and DML ausf E (#6264, #6301). Gepaeckkastens in all the kits except the DML ausf E have more or less the same size. Difference is very marginal.
As for the question of whether the design of Gepaeckkasten remained the same in all Pz.IV versions, I don’t know the answer. But, I would rather think there shouldn’t be much difference, even if there was any. As you pointed out, it may be that Pz.IV ausf D required dedicated design because of the bulge under the commander cupola.
Although I don’t have measurement on the real Gepaeckkasten for Pz.IV, I find it hard to believe that kit manufactures have had wrong-sized Gepaeckkasten in their kits in all these years, and bound to think DML somehow got it wrong in their latest ausf E kits, assuming that Gepaeckkastens for ausf E and later versions were nearly identical.
The size of the Gepaeckkasten is closely related with the shape of the turret rear. I suspect that the wrong turret shape led to the wrong Gepaeckkasten size in the DML kits. As I wrote in the FIX list above, the turret rear shape of DML ausf kit #6264 looked somewhat wrong, as pointed out by Mr. Ogino (see messages below).

And this was not corrected in #6301, and remains, IMHO, THE BIGGEST remaining issue of the DML Pz.IV ausf E kits. I think 1) the overall size of the kit’s turret is too long from front to rear, and 2) the turret width should be narrower than the kit after side hatches.
As the turret rear width is wider than it should be, DML had to design a wider Gepaeckkasten than previous kits so that it will match the turret. |
