If your friend wants to just build a nice kit OOTB then go with either the Tamiya Merkava which is a Mk.1, or the Academy mk.2. They are both nice kits. Once he has gotten his feet wet with one of these then if he is interested, move on to some of the A.M. conversions and updates. (some of which are very pricey and can also be very quite extensive) The Legends stuff is designed for the Academy kits. Friul also makes tracks for the Merk 2 & 3 which are very nice.
