Hi Richard,
The worst two kits I ever built are part of the same display. I built the Esci Demag 1-ton half track towing the Henchcliff (sp?) Pak 38 50mm ATG. Unfortunately, at the time, they were the only "game in town".
The Demag looked good in the box but that is where the fun ended. By the time I got finished assembling it, I think 50% of it was putty from filling in sink holes and mold marks.Clean up on practically every single piece was an ordeal in itself because of the size and location of the mold tree attachments and mold marks, especially the piano hinge on the engine cover. And to top it off, the front wheel suspension assembly had to be cut down considerably to get the tracks to lay flat on the ground.I replaced the "soft convertible top" with tissue paper and loaded the interior with a bunch of accessories to help hide the warts.
The ATG was another little piece of hell. A complete white metal kit with alot of flash and mold voids to be filled, parts too thick and substandard detailing. I ended up covering most of the gun shield and barrel with a camo net on the finished model.
However, they worked up into a fairly presentable display once they were finished and actually took a bronze medal at a local show. I suspect that the judges really gave me something because they were amazed that someone was actually crazy enough to have completed these miserable kits and they were moved by that kind of pig headed stubborness.I half-seriously refer to the entire assembly as "Two Dogs Mating".
Aah, But I'm Feeling Much Better Now,
Mike Siggins |
