Hi Richard,
I agree with you that the earlier Tamiya kits were, and still are, a dream to build. In my opinion that has always been Tamiya's strength. Sure, those older kits lacked alot of detail, had some serious dimensional problems and in some respects were toylike when compared to today's standards. But you can't argue with how easy they were to assemble. The parts fit together well, the assembly sequence was logical and the instructions made sense and were easy to follow. And you ended up with a reasonable representation of the vehicle on the box art.
What a concept. A model kit that made the hobby a relaxing pasttime and not an exercise in futility. Other model companies would do well to imitate Tamiya's basic approach to model kit engineering first, and then work on the accuracy and completeness of detail.
